Journeys of Identity

Journeys of Identity is a play written by Garrett Zuercher.  It is about the start of Deaf education here in America.  We (NTD) were asked by another not-for profit organization here in CT to perform for their kick off event.  We had two weeks to put together this show.  We were able to make it about a 30 minute piece.  We also brought in two other actors to join us for this project.  Both were non deaf actors, which was cool for me!  I was able to switch roles a bit and I did very little (only 3 lines) of speaking. For the rest of the show I was a Shadow Interpreter.  Which means I run around the stage signing all the parts.  We had a great time these two weeks.  For most of our rehearsals and the performance we were at the Old State House in Hartford CT.  This building is now a museum but it is the location that ASD (American School for the Deaf) became a reality.  Which was what our play was about!  It was very cool to work in a place where history took place.  We had two performances one in the afternoon with students from ASD, and then the evening was the kick off for the Walk 4 Hearing.  One of the coolest parts of our afternoon show with ASD is seeing the kids again but seeing them make the connection between where they go to school and what they saw on stage.  They made the connection between the buildings they go to school in where the names are the same as our characters.  They made the connection between history and today.  For our evening show we had a great audience, but before we went on the Governor of CT was at this kick off.  I was in the "balcony" getting ready to go on stage, so I was not able to meet him.  :(  It was a busy two weeks, but some of the most rewarding!
